Among the countless services that water can provide, the Metropolitan Public Water and Sanitation Company (EPMAPS), in addition to providing potable water to the Metropolitan District of Quito (DMQ), has taken advantage of the water resource for the provision of water for several years. electric power for the city of Quito, through its two hydroelectric plants: El Carmen and Recuperadora. Hydroelectric energy is cataloged as one of the clean energies on the planet, however, it is transcendental to objectively demonstrate the positive or negative impacts that the processes of this type of exploitation can bring. The present study sought to demonstrate that the turbination process does not affect the physical, chemical or biological parameters of the raw water destined for electrical generation in the EPMAPS hydroelectric plants, by means of a comparative analysis of the parameters of raw water quality at the entrance. and exit of the two plants. The study was conducted in three phases, first, the data was collected to obtain the necessary information from the two hydroelectric plants analyzed in terms of geographical location, hydrometeorological conditions and systems capture. Secondly, the monitoring carried out at the El Carmen and Recuperadora hydroelectric plants has been indispensable for the determination of the parameters susceptible to be used in the periodic monitoring, corresponding to the third phase of the study. The analyzes carried out on the raw water of the two hydroelectric plants did not show variations that could alter the quality of the water during the turbination process, which confirms the hypothesis proposed, reaffirming that the installation of hydroelectric power plants in the distribution system of the water resource for the city of Quito by the EPMAPS, it does not constitute a contaminating source nor does it represent an obstacle to the use of the resource. The values of phenols and aluminum detected in the water, despite exceeding current environmental regulations, do not represent contamination of the water resource since they are influenced by different aspects such as atmospheric conditions, obtaining water from páramos and human intervention in the surroundings of the captures of the systems studied. The main effect obtained from the turbination process is the insertion of large amounts of oxygen, which has its influence on parameters such as phenols and fecal coliforms, without this being the cause of any type of contamination of the water resource. Additionally, the monitoring carried out to maintain the machinery at the El Carmen hydroelectric plant, showed that the cleaning and change of equipment has no influence on the water quality of the plant.
