Abstract: Mining is an economic activity that perceives the process of extraction, exploitation, and use of minerals found in the earth, for commercial purposes. Ecuador has mining potential and in recent decades it has been a State policy to promote its development. In this framework, transnational companies operate in the country in the extractive sector, both metallic and non-metallic mining. Of these, we selected three to analyze their 2020 sustainability reports, compare them with each other, and, mainly, their observance of the GRI 101:2016 fundamentals to account for their actions. The investigation and analysis were carried out on the reports of Unacem Ecuador and Holcim Ecuador, which operate in the field of non-metallic mining; and LundinGold from metal mining. Objectives: To carry out a comparative analysis between the sustainability reports published by three companies in the extractive sector, in the mining field. Method: Obtaining, selecting, analyzing, comparing, and verifying compliance with GRI 101:2016, in the 2020 sustainability reports of the selected companies. Results: The three sustainability reports comply with the parameters of the GRI 101:2016, however, those issued by the companies Holcim and Unacem do so with strict adherence. Conclusion: Holcim and Unacem rigorously comply with the provisions of the GRI 101 fundamentals and execute similar policies, framed in the postulates of the SDGs. Meanwhile, LundinGold provides information on its actions in the aspects included in the GRI 101, even though it does not prepare its report with full adherence to the fundamentals. Due to the foregoing, we urge the metal mining company LundiGold to report its sustainability/social responsibility efforts, based on the foundations established for this purpose.
