This study evaluates the quality of water, for human consumption and domestic use, of the Limoncocha lagoon, the Pishira, Playayacu, "SEK", Jivino and Napo rivers and seven watershed, constituents of the Limoncocha watershed (south of the Province of Sucumbíos, Ecuador). Also, it develops an evaluation on the water quality of the lagoon for the preservation of fauna and flora and an analysis of its trophic status or "degree of eutrophication". The entire study was based on monthly measurements and sampling, from November 2002 to April 2003, and on relevant information from other studies conducted in the area. For the trophic classification of the lagoon, the concentrations of total phosphorus, total nitrogen and chlorophyll-a in the water were analyzed, the phosphorus present in the sediments was determined and the load of the limiting nutrient that enters the lagoon was calculated annually. Finally, several methodologies were applied to evaluate the trophic state of lakes and lagoons. To establish the degree of "quality" of the bodies of water considered, the physicochemical parameters analyzed were compared with the maximum permissible values established by the Ecuadorian Environmental Legislation and quality indices were calculated. It was concluded that assigning a trophic classification to the lagoon is more complicated than simply applying a model. This is due to the great diversity of results obtained and to the fact that none of the models used for its estimation is fully adapted to the case of Limoncocha. Even so, by combining the different characteristics of the lagoon and all the analyzed information, one might think that it is in a trophic state of mesotrophy or moderate eutrophy, caused in large part by the entry and resuspension of sediments. The waters of the Limoncocha lagoon proved not to be suitable for human consumption and domestic use, but for the preservation of flora and fauna. Of the rivers analyzed, only the waters of the Playayacu River were suitable for human consumption and domestic use, after following a conventional treatment. Finally, six slopes, of the seven evaluated, proved to be suitable for human consumption and domestic use after being oxygenated, avoiding contamination with coliform bacteria and being disinfected or following a conventional treatment.
