La experiencia de construcción de identidad de género no binario en personas entre 18 y 35 años

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore the experience of construction of non-binary gender identity in people between 18 and 35 years of age. It was carried out through a qualitative cross-sectional study, with a non-probabilistic sample of five participants. The research instruments were semi-structured interviews and a focus group, the data analysis was carried out through grounded theory with the coding and categorization of information, making six main themes evident on how participants experienced the construction of their identity: (1) Self-perception and identity construction, (2) Gender as a construct, (3) Outside the binary, (4) Conservative context, (5) Experiences in educational institutions and (6) Current experiences. The findings suggest that non-binary people, during the construction of their identity, face difficult experiences of self-discovery and defiance of the norm, receiving discrimination and pressure from gender stereotypes, especially in educational institutions and because of the conservative context in which they live. However, in adulthood they gain some freedom to build their identity, having more positive experiences in this regard. In future research, it is recommended to expand the sample and include new topics such as inclusion and visibility strategies and the relationship between discrimination through periods of development and mental health.
