Abstract: Microalgae are organisms capable of growing in diverse aquatic environments including wastewater, since they can degrade their nutrients for bioremediation, as well as photosynthesize and accumulate a large amount of biomass containing high-energy lipids, used for biofuel production. In the present study, Scenedesmus sp and Chlorella vulgaris species were used, grown in wastewater from the craft beer brewing process in flat photobioreactors, under the atmospheric conditions of Quito with temperature control. For both species, growth (cell count and optical density), physicochemical parameters (NT, TOC and PT) and lipid extraction were analyzed, which were characterized in the form of free fatty acids (FFA) and fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) for their potential use as biofuel. The results indicate similar biomass productions in Scenedesmus sp and Chlorella vulgaris species (0.028 and 0.027 g/L*d respectively), high nutrient removal percentages in Scenedesmus sp (75.82 % NT, 71.66 % PT and 78.08 % TOC) and in Chlorella vulgaris (60.31 % NT, 78.06 % PT, 52.77 % TOC). The three best extracting solvents in lipids and FFA were ethanol, methanol and chloroform: methanol (1:2), with extraction ranges of 11.11 - 19.07 % m/m for lipids and 7.51 - 41.68 % m/m for FFA. For Chlorella vulgaris better extraction percentages were obtained in FAMEs using H2SO4 with a range between 38.15 - 45.50 % m/m; while for Scenedesmus sp its best extraction was using commercial resin CT-269 with a range between 30 - 70 % m/m. Although the values of lipids, FFA and FAMEs are low compared to studies by other authors, the possible use of beer wastewater to obtain biofuels from the cultivation of these two species is not ruled out.
