Abstract: In the metal-mechanical industry, the generation of solid waste is the main environmental problem. These wastes are considered hazardous wastes because they represent a risk to human health due to the presence of toxic metals; and a risk to the environment due to soil, water and air contamination. For this reason, the inertization process was applied by vitrification. This research began with the sampling of the sludge from the galvanizing processes in the metal-mechanic industry, Procesadora VYMSA. Subsequently, the sludge was characterized by means of a residue test; the sludge had a pH of 10.8 and a humidity of 78.69%; the metals Cd, Ni, Pb, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Hg, Co, Cr and Ag were analyzed. The concentration of the metals was compared with the maximum permissible limits (MPL) for extraction of heavy metals in dry bases of the Technical Standard for Hazardous and Special Wastes (NT005); Ni, Cr and Zn were outside the MPL; Cu, Cr, Mn, Fe and Zn were outside the linear range of determination, and Hg and Ag were below the method's limit of quantification. Subsequently, the characterization of the sludge was performed by means of the Leachate test applying the EPA 1311 methodology: Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure, for the leaching process, the extractant fluid #2 was used, and the TCLP extract was collected to analyze the heavy metals mentioned above. The concentration of the metals did not exceed the MPLs in the PEC Extract for inorganic constituents of NT005. However, when compared to the MPLs in Table 9: Discharge limit to a freshwater body of the Ministerial Agreement 097 A; Cu, Pb, Cd, Mn and Zn, exceeded these MPLs. Based on these results, in order to avoid contamination of freshwater sources by leaching of the heavy metals present, 26 sludge inertization-vitrification tests were carried out, reaching the ideal vitrification conditions: maximum temperature 1063°C, maximum temperature time 1 hour, heating rate 60°C/hour, cooling time 10 hours, vitrifying ground glass and equipment used glass furnace. These conditions allowed obtaining the vitrified sludge samples from test P22 (70% sludge/30% ground glass) to P26 (30% sludge/70% ground glass), and depending on the percentage of sludge and ground glass, the samples presented a homogeneous and smooth luster. To check the efficiency of the vitrification process, the EPA 1311 methodology was applied to the vitrified samples (P22 to P26) and the percentage of inertization was calculated. The percentage of inertization of Cu, Fe, Zn, Ni, Pb and As increased with increasing vitrification percentage until reaching 100%, while for Cd, Hg, Se, Mn, Co and Cr 100% inertization was obtained for the different tests. The point of interest of this study was to find the lowest percentage of vitrificant that provides environmentally acceptable results according to the regulations. In this sense, sample P24 (50% sludge and 50% vitrificant) showed optimal results, and when comparing the concentrations of the metals with the discharge limits for a freshwater body of Ministerial Agreement 097 A, these comply with the regulations. Pb cannot be evaluated because the method's quantification limit (0.3 mg/L) is higher than the MPL established in the standard (0.2 mg/L). The vitrification process applied allowed the sludge from the metal-mechanical industry to be stabilized and transformed into a non-toxic substance, obtaining a "glass" material that can be used as a "secondary raw material" in construction materials and costume jewelry. Thus opening the doors to a circular economy because a new life is given to the waste by reincorporating it into the production cycle, taking advantage of a resource and reusing a waste that, due to its properties, could not return to nature without causing environmental damage at the end of its useful life.
