Equipamiento para el aprendizaje y talleres prácticos en el barrio de Quitumbe

Abstract

This work is based on an urban analysis carried out in the south of the city of Quito, in the parish of Quitumbe. As a result of the analysis, a lack of surrounding academic and cultural facilities was evidenced. For this reason, the proposal of this research is to create a learning and practical workshop infrastructure for public use that complements those of the sector. Moreover, it would be useful for residents and students. It will also serve as a meeting and recreation space. First, an analysis of land use, activities, pedestrian and vehicular flows, accessibility and presence of facilities was carried out to establish the most suitable lot for the project application within the study area. The challenge within this proposal is to find the most appropriate way to apply “the systematic design of supports” to public facilities. To do this, it was necessary to start from the basis, that is, from the definition of a library and specifically of a public library. Then, it was necessary to investigate the users’ learning modes to design the spaces in a more personalized way to any type of user, according to different needs. Next, Habraken's systematic design of supports theory was analyzed. This theory exclusively tackles dwelling, so it had to be adapted to public facilities. Hence, easily adapted heterogeneous open spaces were added. In the final design, a central patio is proposed which functions as a support and articulator element for the space. Around it, the main circulation is created producing a path through the project from beginning to end as if it were a single route. Around it, different spaces are formed. The entire design is divided into two blocks, the first one corresponds to the library as such and the second one corresponds to the adaptable space, that is where all the workshops will be held.
