Mujeres transgénero: acompañamiento familiar en el proceso de construcción de su identidad de género

Abstract

Introduction: The dominant gender binarism in society considers and accepts heterosexuality as a unique model, while other forms of expression such as transgenerism are exposed to social exclusion. The traditionalist family model is structured under these conceptions and the response to a member that breaks with binary dynamics, brings with it intrafamiliar emotional crises. This situation has a significant impact on the process of building gender identity and the mental health of transgender women. Materials and methods: This research presents the narratives of three transgender women and two relatives, who reside in two cities in the province of Imbabura. This research was done through the "Life Stories" methodology, focused on the process of gender identity building and the role that their family played. Results: Life stories of transgender women and family members narrate the process of gender identity building that begins to manifest itself at early experiences, becoming consolidated at the beginning of adulthood. During this transition, the outstanding support granted by the family, especially the mother figure, stands out. Conclusion: The transition process of a transgender woman is an experience that manifests itself in an individual and family way. The changes that are generated in the family nucleus imply a period of readjustment to a new reality; being essential the accompaniment of the family to transgender women in the process of building their gender identity, since it is a factor that allows the strengthening of internal personal resources.
