Abstract: There are several problems that afflict the use of microalgae as a biofuel feedstock. One of them is the need for water with enough nutrients for its growth and another is that there are microorganisms that compete for these nutrients. On the other hand, the great potential of these microalgae for wastewater purification is also known. As a solution to the environmental problems of swine wastewater and as a possibility of using these waters as a culture medium for Chlorella vulgaris, the present study was carried out. The large-scale cultivation of these microalgae requires a pretreatment of the waters, to eliminate bacteria and microorganisms. This procedure is usually expensive and complex. Three economic methods of disinfection were tested in this study: UV irradiation, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and peracetic acid (PAA), in various doses and concentrations. The UV light treatment for 30 minutes reduced approximately 4 log of the total bacteria in this type of water, while 60 minutes produced total inactivation. The sodium hypochlorite treatments had microbial reductions of 0.8 log at a dose of 30 mg / L and 1 log at a dose of 60 mg / L. A quantity of 12.5 mg / L peracetic acid produced approximately 2 logarithmic reductions, while 50 mg / L of PAA was needed to achieve 3 reductions. The growth of C. vulgaris in the pretreated waters presented an adaptation phase and an exponential phase of growth, while the untreated water had the two previous phases and the stationary phase, the growth being less than that of the pretreated water. The phosphorus and nitrogen nutrients had reductions of 97% and 89%, respectively, for pretreated waters and 94% and 85% for control water, after cultivation. The COD was reduced 80% for pretreated water and 70% for untreated water.
