Abstract: The Municipal School "Sebastián de Benalcázar" has an important history of success and transformations, for this reason it is considered as an educational and cultural icon in Quito. The school is located in the hyper center of the city, in a strategic area of high development and significant population density. The facilities of the educational center have not changed significantly since 1956, in which they were built. The school spaces are closed for the exclusive use of students during the day. The most important school blocks are those assigned to the classrooms and are located towards 6 de diciembre avenue and Irlanda street. The open spaces for recreation and sports are located close to República del Salvador avenue and Portugal avenue . The compositional structure of the building is grouped; that is, it is the accumulation of volumes with variety in implantation, height and shape. Nowadays, contemporary schools contribute and function as neighborhood equipment due to the programmatic coincidences with the architectural object. Consequently, an architectural design of the Municipal School "Sebastián de Benalcázar" is proposed as a spatial solution to the specific needs of the inhabitants in educational, cultural, commercial and recreational terms. The project integrates spaces as equipment for the neighborhood with the programmatic solution of the architectural object. Additionally, the proposal uses elements of the existing architectural object after the corresponding formal, functional, significance and technical-constructive assessments.
