Description: The Limoncocha Lake has in its sediments concentrations of various heavy metals, which are considered chemical elements that damage the ecosystems. Therefore, with conservation purposes, the present research was developed. The general objective was to determine the mass transfer coefficients of heavy metals from the sediments of the Limoncocha Lake to ultrapure water, following the EPA 1311 method. It is very important to know these coefficients because with them is possible to infer the contribution of the sediments to the concentration of metals in the water and consequently. The existence of these pollutants in the flora and fauna of the lake that lead to the bioaccumulation of pollutants in more complex animals such as fish, which are consumed by the population of the area. In previous studies, the existence of contamination by heavy metals in water and in sediments of the Limoncocha Lake has been determined; however, the kinetics of the contamination of these metals have not been studied before. For that reason, the diffusivity coefficients were determined by a mathematic model proposed by Hernández (2016), applied to a leaching process that allowed finding the variation of the concentration of the metals in the sediments as a function of the agitation time. With this study, it was found the mass transfer coefficients of metals analyzed and they are between 2,51x10-11 cm2 /min and 2,86x10-08 cm2 /min for the different points of the lake. With this coefficients allowed to determine the mass transfer was low and the contribution of heavy metals to biotic beings can be complemented with future investigations in suspended solids.
