Description: The aim of the current research project was to realize a data-based classification of satellite images, in order to analyze land use and vegetation cover of the Capucuy River basin, Limoncocha, Sucumbíos (Ecuador), between 2010 and 2017. The OBIA method (Object-based image analysis) was applied. The most optimal images proposed by the Geographic Military Institute of Ecuador were selected and analyzed using two different software. The first one is Ecognition, a software of German production, which segmented and classified into objects the four images chosen, with the purpose of acquiring shapefiles of each class of land use and vegetation cover. Thanks to the ArcGis software, two photogrammetric mosaics were created, the first one for the year 2010 and the second one for 2017. Furthermore, the land use maps were elaborated with the results obtained in Ecognition. For the year 2010, only 54.80% of the surface of the basin was analyzed, due to the high cloudiness that did not allow to observe more. For the year 2017, it was possible to analyze the 93.17% of the surface. According to the study carried out by Gil (2017), in 1976 the 96.30% of Capucuy river basin was covered of native forest. It means that, compared with the data obtained in 2017, the results of the present investigation show a loss of an impressive 38.85% of forest areas in 41 years, this means a 0.95% of annual product of the anthropogenic activity, including deforestation to obtain an agricultural land.
