The purpose of the study is to evaluate the quality of the river Machángara, for which data from the sampling campaigns was used. the I. Metropolitan Municipality of Quito carried out in the years 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994, in which up to 35 physico-chemical parameters were measured and microbiological. Within the work, the systematization of these data is presented and quality assessment through three methods: the first through the execution of curves for the different parameters, the second by means of pollution indicators and finally using a variation of the method of Battelle-Columbus that is applied in the Impact Evaluation Studies Environmental. All the results found point to the fact that the river Machángara is in a state of high contamination especially in its medium section, which is not usable for any use and which produces impacts especially related to public health. The work concludes noting that graphing and analyzing the parameters, physical-chemical, microbiological, heavy metals and others (phenols, detergents, cyanide and oils), are a tool that allows you to compare the values found with those that they ask for the standards, the Battelle method gives a value of environmental quality total current, allowing comparison of the overall quality of the river in different times and years and can be a useful tool in comparing not only the behavior of the river over time, but also verify the quality of this river with others.
Description: The study has as objective to make an evaluation or diagnosis of the water quality of the Machangara river, who crosses Quito city. For achieving that goal the sampling campaigns for the years 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994 that worked the Municipality of Quito were utilized , in which were measured up to 35 physicalchemical and microbiological parameters. Inside the work it is shown a data systematization and the water quality evaluation through 3 methodologies: the first one using the drawing of curves for the different parameters, the second one following the contamination index and finally using a variation of the Battelle - Columbus method that has been used for the Environmental Impact Assessment. All the result founded point out that the Machangara River is currently carrying out a heavy or high contamination state most in its middle course. In addition the water has no better use or it can not be utilized, and that cause important environmental impacts related to the public health. The work finish showing that drawing curves for the physics, chemical, microbiological, heavy metals and others (fenols, cyanide, detergents and oils) parameters that are a very good toll that permits make collates between the values founded in the laboratory with the values that are asking the water quality standards and how they meet, on the other hand the Battelle - Columbus method can give a value of the environmental quality of the river, which let to confront the global quality of the Machangara river for different years and seasons and can be very useful for comparing not only the behaviors of the river in terms of time but also in terms of its quality among other rivers.
