Descripción : From a psychological point of view, there are distinctive elements in order to face illness and death once old age has been reached. It's not enough to understand seniorhood as an enlargement of the period of adulthood or as the final stage of life. There are specific characteristics in this life period that need to be understood. The objective of the present great report is to get involved with senior people, and to understand how their point of view during this stage gives form to their understanding of illness and death. Mass media, newspapers mainly, have not contributed to inform and educate the population. Then, it is of high significance to promote the knowledge of these diseases that currently are affecting a large number of people. Therefore, people needs to be prepared so they will be able to prevent them and also to access to treatment to these illnesses once they have appeared. The database that will be completed through this research will open the space to begin a series of journals that may be reached by newspapers, government offices, and other institutions that may be interested in understanding the problems of senior citizens. It is also of my concern that the information collected in this research will cause a positive impression in general population and will make people 60 years old and over, feel specially identified by these reports. 80% of Ecuador's population is below the poverty line, and there is a clear correlation between socio-economic conditions and elder abuse. Facing this reality, government has to make a consistent policy that will provide elder people with health care, psychological and occupational care, so they will enjoy a decent life such as that of any other citizen. Government should start these protection systems getting help from NGO's. Senior citizens are part of our society and they should not be forgotten, but they have to be provided with means to carry on a decent life during their last years.
