Description: The present investigation studied the possible relationship between stress level and coping strategies used by mothers of children diagnosed with congenital hypothyroidism. Information was collected from (N = 25) mothers between 18 and 37 years of age of which 84% reported being primary caregivers of their children diagnosed with the disease. The majority of mothers indicated that they were in a committed relationship with their partner. They completed a battery of printed instruments (Parental Stress Index and the COPE Test). The battery was administered in person and on an individual basis prior authorization of the mothers' voluntary participation through informed consent. Mothers reported high levels of stress related to the behavior of their children (child self-regulation). The most commonly used coping strategy was the use of religion. The least reported strategy was the use of substances. Contrary to the hypothesis of the study, there was no significant relationship between coping strategies and total stress.
