The constant lack of control in terms of commercialization and administration of drugs has increased resistance to antibiotics by many bacterial pathogens, becoming a global public health problem. The urgency to solve these complications that difficult some clinical treatments has forced the creation of new mechanisms to analyze bacterial sensitivity using natural alternatives such as Banisteriopsis caapi, which has antimicrobial (antibacterial, antiparasitic) and some cancer effects of clinical interest. This study focused on antibacterial analysis. Taking these concerns into account, the aim of this study was to demonstrate the antibacterial effect of four extracts of Banisteriopsis caapi (of different varieties) on two bacterial strains: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923 and Klebsiella pneumoniae ATCC1705. The amount of β-carbolines (harmine) was quantified by reverse phase HPLC for each extract (E3, E7, E8 and E9) and broth microdilutions were carried out to determine inhibition percentages and their respective IC50. It was found that for S.aureus all the extracts reached similar levels of inhibition; while for K. pneumoniae the most potent extract (E9) was the least effective. It could be said that, the extracts of the old variety have greater antibiotic activity (in general they are more powerful and effective). However, there is a need for additional studies to know the toxicity of the extracts as well as the identification of the underlying molecular mechanisms responsible for these biological activities.es
