Título : Medium temperature phase change materials thermal characterization by the t-history method and differential scanning calorimetry
Autor : Gaona, David; Urresta, E.; Martínez Gómez, Javier; Guerrón, Gonzalo
Resumen : This paper presents a thermal characterization of salt mixtures applying the T-History Method and the Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) techniques. By using water as a standard substance, the original T-History method was developed to analyze materials with melting points under 100°C. This is the first research that proposes to replace water by glycerin to characterize medium melting temperature PCMs (140-220°C). Moreover, the DSC technique was used to validate and compare the results obtained with the T-history method for each mixture. For instance, the system compound of 40% KNO3 – 60% NaNO3 was studied, and the enthalpy of fusion determined by THM and DSC differs by 2.1% between each method. The results given by the two methods for all mixtures showed that both techniques are complementary and present satisfactory agreement with the specialized literature.

Autor : Martínez-Gómez, Javier; Ibarra, D.; Villacis, S.; Cuji, P.; Cruz, P.R.
Resumen : This research aims to analyze cooking parameters in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), electric resistance
and induction stoves for eight dishes of the Ecuadorian cuisine. During tests, it has been monitored
the temperature, time, electrical grid parameters, concentrations of CO and CO2. In addition it has been
studied the microbiological and physiochemical changes produced by the thermal treatment in food and
a discriminative triangular test for determining the differences in the consumers perception between
samples made with induction and LPG based stoves. The results showed which even with an exhaust
hood working, there was still a significant value of concentration of CO and CO2 during cooking with a
LPG stoves. As a result of these analyses the induction stove shows a better response during the heating
process and energy efficiency which have influence in temperatures, taste, vitamin preservation, cooking
times, energy consumption and cost to the user.

Autor : Kastillo, J. P.; Martínez-Gómez, Javier; Villacis, S. P.; Riofrio, A. J.
Resumen : This manuscript describes the analysis of temperature and the distribution of natural convection flow of three different cookware materials composed of stainless steel, aluminum and enameled iron, when heating olive oil. A Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) software, called COMSOL Multiphysics©, has been used to analyze the heat transfer process for this study. In addition, a thermographic camera and a particle tracer were employed to compare the measurements of temperature, heat transfer and flow velocity, obtained from the CFD analysis. The results demonstrated that the enameled iron was the best choice of cookware material for induction stoves, as with the increment of oil temperature, this material had the biggest contrails and oil velocity convection flow in the center of the cookware.

Autor : Martínez Gómez, Javier; Portilla, Eduardo; Espinosa Aguilar, Juan Gabriel; Moreno, Gustavo
Resumen : The following research presents the study and selection of an
alternative composite material to manufacture electrical insulation devices for
the high voltage circuit of Otto cycle internal combustion engines, better known
as gasoline engines. High voltage insulators are generally made of materials
such as rubber or silicone, whose material, when subjected to high temperatures,
suffers technical degradation, causing electric power leaks and engine power
losses. The purpose of this study is to suggest a composite material, with which
only these insulating bodies can be manufactured. To do this, multicriteria
selection techniques are used while the results are validated by virtual simulation
of thermal character and normed experimental tests.

Resumen : Introduction: Ecuador has recently implemented its First Working Conditions
Survey. Objective: to describe working and employment conditions and workers’
health status in Ecuador in a sample that allows comparison with previous
Latin American surveys. Methods: a sample of 1,713 workers was drawn
from the First Working Conditions Survey in Ecuador. Prevalence and a 95%
confidence Interval (95%CI) were calculated and compared with previous Latin
American surveys in Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Central America, and Uruguay.
Results: men were more often exposed to hazardous working conditions, with
noise (81% of men and 69% of women), and repetitive movements (56% and
48%, respectively) being the most frequently reported. About 31% of men and
19% of women worked more than 40 hours per week. Almost 11% of both
women and men reported poor self-perceived health status. The prevalence of
occupational injury was the highest in the region: 15% for men and 8.4% for
women. Conclusions: this is a first approach to the working and employment
conditions and workers’ health status in Ecuador. To harmonize and improve
Working Conditions Surveys in Latin America should be a priority goal for
enhancing regional occupational health surveillance.

Resumen : This article studies the process of design and implementation of tiltable suspensions in narrow cars. Narrow
cars are a new type of vehicle that could solve the problems of congestion, environmental pollution, and lack
of parking spaces in cities. However, the size of narrow cars does not only bring benefits, but it also carries
challenges on the implementation of tiltable suspensions. To study the implementation of tiltable suspensions
on narrow cars, is performed an exploratory investigation using data from previews studies on the subject and
is applied the PRISMA Declaration. Our analysis compared previously built and proposed tiltable suspension
models, including their respective mechanism designs control systems. We established a design, an
implementation, and a control and simulation process for tiltable suspensions. Comparison between traditional
methods and simulation software showed that simulation software can assist on testing the mathematical
model.

Título : Development of a light-tracking and -redirecting system actuated by hand-gesture recognition
Autor : Liu Cheng, Alexander; Llorca Vega, Néstor Andrés; Latorre, Galoget; Coba, Daniel
Resumen : This paper presents a context-aware light-
tracking and -redirecting system guided by hand-gesture

recognition. It is conceived as yet another mechanism within
an ongoing development of a more intuitive and technically
sophisticated Ambient Intelligence / Active and Assisted Living
ecosystem. The detailed system consists of individual nodes

that are strategically installed across regions of a building-
envelope, which enables this latter to draw or deflect direct

natural light into or away from specific locations within the
built-environment as requested by the user(s) via recognized
hand-gestures. Each node is capable of sending and receiving
sensed-data continuously via ZigBee with one another as well

as with microcontrollers embedded within the interior built-
environment. Said microcontrollers are equipped with

cameras via which four hand-gestures may be recognized. The
first or initializing hand-gesture engages the system and
enables it to recognize any of the remaining hand-gestures. The
second redirects light towards the position of the detected
hand-gesture, while the third redirects it away from said
position. Finally, the fourth gesture turns the light-tracking
and -redirecting system off.

Development of a smart sleeve control mechanism for active assisted living

Título : Development of a smart sleeve control mechanism for active assisted living
Autor : Liu Cheng, Alexander; Santos, Caio; Santos, Pedro; Llorca Vega, Néstor Andrés
Resumen : This paper describes the development of a Smart
Sleeve control mechanism for Active Assisted Living. The Smart
Sleeve is a physically worn sleeve that extends the user’s control
capability within his/her intelligent built-environment by
enabling (1) direct actuation and/or (2) teleoperation via a
virtual interface. With respect to the first, the user may point
his/her sleeve-wearing arm towards a door or a window and
actuate an opening or a shutting; or towards a light and effect
its turning on and off as well as regulating its intensity; or even
towards a particular region to initiate ventilation of it. With
respect to the second, the user may engage actuations in systems
beyond his/her field of vision by interacting with a virtual
representation of the intelligent built-environment projected on
any screen or surface. For example, the user is able to shut the
kitchen’s door from his/her bedroom by extending the Smart
Sleeve towards the door of a virtual representation of the
kitchen projected (via a standard projector and/or television
monitor) on the bedroom’s wall. In both cases, the Smart Sleeve
recognizes the object which the user wishes to engage with—
whether in the real or the virtual worlds—(a) by detecting the
orientation of the extended arm via an Accelerometer /
Gyroscope / Magnetometer sensor; and (b) by detecting a
specific forearm muscle contraction via Electromyography
caused by the closing and opening of the fist, which serves to
select the object. Once the object is identified and selected with
said muscle contraction, subsequent arm gestures effect a
variety of possible actuations for a given object (e.g., a window
may be opened / shut or dragged to differing degrees or
aperture; a light’s intensity may be increased or decreased, etc.).

In cases of ambiguous selections, the user my use voice-
commands to explicitly identify the desired object of selection.

Furthermore, due to this voice-based recognition mechanism,
which recognizes both spoken commands as well the identity of

Development of an adaptive rainwater-harvesting system for intelligent selective redistribution

Título : Development of an adaptive rainwater-harvesting system for intelligent selective redistribution
Autor : Liu Cheng, Alexander; Morán Silva, Luis; Real Buenaño, Martín; Llorca Vega, Néstor Andrés
Resumen : This paper presents an adaptive rainwater-
harvesting (RWH) system based on a rainwater-collecting unit

that (1) ascertains baseline water-quality in its collected
rainwater via Ph- and turbidity sensors, and (2) redistributes it
to designated toilet-tanks and/or irrigation points. Each unit is
integrated with an XBee S2B antenna to enable cost-effective
and energy-efficient mesh capabilities for inter-unit
communication when two or more units conform the system.
Moreover, each unit is also an Internet-of-Things (IoT) device
that transmits water-tank levels and sensor-data to a local
supervising microcontroller (MCU) via Open Sound Control
(OSC). This MCU is, in turn, capable of communication with a
cloud-based data plotting / storing and remote-control
platform—viz., Adafruit IO—via Message Queueing Telemetry
Transport (MQTT). The interface with Adafruit IO enables a
remote administrator (a) to monitor water-tank levels and
sensor readings, and (b) to execute manual overrides in the
system—for example, any or all of the units may be shut-down

remotely. When only one unit conforms the system, its water-
tank services the toilet-tanks and/or irrigation points connected

to the unit. When two or more units conform the system, their
water-tank outputs are physically linked, enabling any unit to
contribute to the servicing of a variety of connected toilet-tanks
and/or irrigation points. In both single or multi-unit

configurations, water redistribution is impartial to any end-
point at initialization, yet over time the system identifies which

end-point(s) require(s) water with a higher frequency and
selectively prioritizes servicing to it/them to guarantee prompt
refill / supply. The present work is part of ongoing developments

of features and services that attempt to imbue the built-
environment with intelligence via Information and

Communication Technologies (ICTs).

Resumen : Consumption forecast models with their proper billing allow establishing strategies to
avoid overloads in systems and penalties for high consumption. This paper presents a
comparison of multivariate data prediction models that allow detecting the final
monthly cost of electricity consumption in relation to the different billing parameters.
As relevant results, it was obtained that the models based on decision support
machines have a better sensitivity when compared with different metrics that evaluate
the prediction error with training set improved by backward elimination criteria.

Resumen : The Galapagos Islands ecosystem has a great biodiversity
and endemism, which is greatly affected by different human
activities present in the islands. Maritime passenger transport
on the Itabaca Canal is based on vessels with combustion engines, consuming an annual average of 4200 gallons of fuel
that produce about 38 tons of CO2 per year. In this sense, the
operation of the INER 1 solar-powered electric catamaran is
a sustainable and renewable model for maritime passenger
transport within the Galapagos Islands. This transport system is
influenced by different variables of the social, environmental
- seasonal and energy type that need to be evaluated to
analyze which of them is the one that most influences its
operation and why its importance. To this end, it has been
proposed to use the attribute selection method to handle the
data in an adequate manner and to predict efficiently the
effects of each of them on the vessel. Based on the
aforementioned it is proposed to carry out a bibliographic
review on the variables that most influence or in the operation
of the solar catamaran “INER 1” in the Galapagos Islands.

Resumen : This research represents the first attempt to assess the spatial and temporal distribution based on micro-
meso scales on two species with different host preference habits (anthropophilic vs zoophilic), in the major

Leishmaniasis endemic area in Ecuador, tourist locations, and Biosphere reserve. Phlebotomine species,
Lutzomyia trapidoi (Fairchild) and Lutzomyia reburra (Fairchild and Hertig), were analyzed by trap/habitat/
month/locality/altitude, through the Poisson generalized regression model. Our data reveal a bimodal pattern
for both species related with low precipitations and preference for forest habitat. Altitude, proximity to the
forest, and the river were the variables that determine the hypervolume of the spatial distribution of relative
abundance, where the overlap of these two species increases the risk of translocation and circulation of the
etiological agent of leishmaniasis in sylvatic environments to rural–tourist–biosphere reserve areas and vice
versa. The ecological characteristics of these two phlebotomines could explain the permanence of the major
active and endemic focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the North-Western Ecuador a key aspect in tourism
health-security in alternative tourism.

Resumen : The objective of this study is to analyze gender
inequalities in the relationship between
employment-family conflict (EFC) and health status
in the working population of Quito and Guayaquil.
This is a cross-sectional study of non-agricultural
employees, aged 18 or older and covered by social
security, who were interviewed between 2016-
2017 in the First Survey of Safety Conditions and
Health at Work of Quito and Guayaquil (n = 1729).
Poisson regression models with robust variance
separated by sex were used to calculate adjusted
prevalence ratios for six health indicators. In both
sexes, EFC was associated with poor self-perceived
health, poor mental health, and head or back pain
or discomfort, although the magnitude of the
association was greater in women. Furthermore,
EFC was associated with digestive problems only
in women (aPR=1.65; 95% CI: 1.17-2.34). In neither
sex was there an association between EFC and
occupational accidents. The results of this study
show that EFC is associated with poor health
conditions in the working population, particularly
among women. Public policies and workplace
interventions aimed at achieving a balance
between employment and family life from a gender
perspective could help reduce impairments to
health and gender inequalities in health.

in female mice. Am J Physiol Gastrointest Liver Physiol 315: G772–
G780, 2018. First published August 10, 2018; doi:10.1152/ajpgi.
00022.2018.—High-fat diet (HFD) feeding or leptin-deficient mice

are extensively used as models resembling features of human nonal-
coholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The concurrence of experimental

factors as fat content and source or total caloric intake leads to
prominent differences in the development of the hepatic steatosis and
related disturbances. In this work, we characterized the hepatic lipid
accumulation induced by HFD in wild-type (WT) and ob/ob mice
with the purpose of differentiating adaptations to HFD from those
specific of increased overfeeding due to leptin deficiency-associated
hyperphagia. Given that most published works have been done in
male models, we used female mice with the aim of increasing the

body of evidence regarding NAFLD in female subjects. HFD pro-
moted liver lipid accumulation only in the hyperphagic strain. Nev-
ertheless, a decrease of lipid droplet-associated cholesteryl ester (CE)

in both WT and obese animals was observed. These changes were
accompanied by an improvement in the profile of lipoproteins that
transport cholesterol and liver function markers in plasma from ob/ob
mice and a lower hepatic index. Using primary hepatocytes from
female mice, overaccumulation of CE induced by 0.4 mM oleic acid
reversed in the presence of a specific Takeda G protein-coupled bile
acid receptor agonist. Nevertheless, hepatocytes from male mice were
not responsive. This study suggests that enterohepatic circulation of
bile acids might be one of the factors that can affect sex dimorphism
in NAFLD development, which underlines the importance of includ-
ing female models in the NAFLD research field.

Título : Development of an acoustically adaptive modular system for near real-time clarity-enhancement
Autor : Liu Cheng, Alexander; Cruz, Patricio; Llorca Vega, Néstor Andrés; Mena, Andrés
Resumen : This paper details the development of an acoustically adaptive
modular system capable of enhancing Speech Clarity (C50 Clarity Index) in
specific locations within a space in near real-time. The mechanical component of
the system consists of quadrilateral, truncated pyramidal modules that extend or
retract perpendicularly to their base. This enables said modules (1) to change in
the steepness of the sides of their frustum, which changes the way incoming
sound waves are deflected/reflected/diffused by the surfaces of the pyramid; and
(2) to reveal or to hide the absorbent material under each module, which enables
a portion of incoming sound waves to be absorbed/dissipated in a controlled
manner. The present setup considers a fragmentary implementation of six
modules. The behavior of these modules is determined by two steps in the
computational component of the system. First, the initial position of the modules
is set via a model previously generated by an evolutionary solver, which
identifies the optimal extension/retraction extent of each of the six modules to
select for individual configurations that collectively ascertain the highest clarity
in said specific locations. Second, a simulated receiver at the location in question
measures the actual clarity attained and updates the model’s database with
respect to the configuration’s corresponding clarity-value. Since the nature of
acoustics is not exact, if the attained measurement is lower than the model’s
prediction for said location under the best module-configuration, but higher than
the second-best configuration for the same location, the modules remain at the
initial configuration. However, if the attained values are lower, this step
reconfigures the modules to instantiate the second—or third-, fourth-, etc.—best
configuration and updates the model’s database with respect to the new optimal
module-configuration value. These steps repeat each time the user moves to
another specific location. The objective of the system is to contribute to the
intelligent and intuitive Speech Clarity regulation of an inhabited space. This
contributes to its Interior Environmental Quality, which promotes well-being
and quality of life.

Título : Characterization of the mocora leaf for mechanical purposes
Autor : Martínez-Gómez, Javier; Nicolalde, Juan Francisco; Maiguashca, Javier
Resumen : Some of Ecuador’s flora hasn’t been characterized, this paper searches the determine the mechanical, thermal and moisture absorption features of the leaf of the mocora palm, by means of tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy SEM, thermos-gravimetrical TGA analysis, water and resin absorption tests. The mocora presented 28Mpa strength as a single strap and as a braid an elongation 23.43%, thermally showed a resistance to degradation near de 300®C, relate with SEM observation the leaf of mocora have a cover and for this reason the water take some time to be absorbed.
