Until today, the management of urban solid waste within the Metropolitan District of Quito has focused mainly on its final disposal, but not on its energy use. This fact, together with the growing consumerism of the population, has generated serious environmental and economic losses for the District. The objective of this project is the quantification of the upper and lower caloric power of urban solid waste in the Metropolitan District of Quito, through the development of a laboratory analysis methodology, in which the use of a calorimetric pump is calculated the heat released by a specific sample. The determination of caloric power allows the energy recovery of waste, thus establishing the possibility of using them as fuel or in obtaining thermal and / or electrical energy. During the investigation, which incorporated to the categories of organic matter, wood, paper and cardboard, it was determined that the last two can be considered as optimal raw material for a thermal treatment, being the category of wood the one that presented a higher caloric power . The data obtained opens the way to the possibility of incorporating a thermal treatment to the urban waste management system generated within the District.
