In the present work a study on the current trophic state of the lagoon of Limoncocha located in the Biological Reserve of Limoncocha, province of Sucumbíos. Because the lagoon is considered as the main system of the Reserve because of its great ecological importance, tourism and for the inhabitants of the area as a source of fishing for domestic consumption, it is important to know the current situation in which it is, obtaining data to determine the physical and chemical characteristics of the lagoon. The phenomenon of eutrophication happens naturally, but is accelerated by the intervention of the man. The control of the process of eutrophication is today one of the most important problems and urgent of ecology and in particular of limnology. It is also one of the problems environmental issues that generate interest from developed and developing countries due to the impact that it has in the biological, landscape and recreational value of the ecosystems. To determine the current trophic status of the lagoon, three parameters were analyzed during a period of six months (February to July 2010): transparency of the lagoon, chlorophyll a and total phosphorus present in water and, by applying the Index of Modified Trophic Status of Toledo Jr., employed for warm tropical lakes, was carried out also the trophic classification of the Limoncocha lagoon.
