The following study aims to establish the conditions and characteristics of a variation of the traditional composting system adjusted to the specific properties of the African palm rachis biodegradation. For this, a pilot process has been established that consists of four reactors defined by the physical form in which the material is introduced into the system (whole, chopped and mixed one by one) and which maintain flood conditions in order to increase the surface area of diffusion and action of microorganisms. After 116 days of biodegradation, a low quality fertilizer was obtained, in comparison with the nutritional requirements of the African palm, but that can be used for other crops or as an improvement of the soil texture. The continuous monitoring of this reaction allowed to define the following characteristics of the process: • Pre-biodegradation must be carried out to facilitate handling of the material • The optimum pH is 7 and the optimum temperature is approximately 20ºC • It has two levels of degradation, one aerobic and the other anaerobic • Allows the development of mesophilic bacteria and non-thermophilic actinomycetes • The quality of the fertilizer and the speed of reaction depend on the density of the material, which is a function of its physical characteristics. • Better quality of fertilizer is obtained with the entire rachis than with the chopped rachis, however, its handling, on an industrial scale, becomes very complex.-
