Description: In Ecuador, work-related traffic accidents are legally recognized. In particular, accidents going back and forth from home to place of work and vice versa (in-itínere) have experienced a considerable percentage increase in recent years and so far there are no studies that have investigated these occupational hazards as a problem in the field of health and safety at work. Objective: Estimate the relative risk of suffering accidents in-itínere compared to accidents occurred in the workplace by analyzing official sources of secondary information in the period from Material and methods: Descriptive study of work accidents classified as in-itínere by the General Insurance of Labor Risks of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute grouped through demographic variables, economic activity, provinces, severity, type of injury and part of the injured body. For the analysis, descriptive statistics, relative risk calculation (R.R. -CI95%) and the Pearson chi-square test were used. Results: Women presented a higher prevalence and risk (R.R. = 1,86, CI95%: 1,80-1,92) of suffering in-itineutical accidents. Likewise, workers in the industrial sector and services aged between 18 and 35 years (R.R. = 1,16, CI95%: 1,12-1,20) are more likely than the rest of economic activities and age groups. There is a tendency to increase and probability of dying due to accidents in-itínere (R.R. = 1, 66, CI95%: 1, 43-1, 92) than in place of work. Contusions, injuries and fractures in lower and upper limbs are the most prevalent in workers who have suffered accidents in-itínere. Conclusions: The results of this study lead to consider this problem as a priority in occupational and public health due to the increase of this type of work accidents. The need arises to continue with future investigations and attention to this type of labor risks by the public organisms and companies of Ecuador.
