The artificial channel of vent, the seasonal river of the city of Puerto López - Ecuador, locally called the Poza de la Muerte and built as a result of the phenomenon of the child of 1998, has become the place of disposal of wastewater and solid waste , of approximately 400 homes in the La Ensenada neighborhood; making it a risk to the health of the population and tourists. As well as for the Eretmochelys imbricata hawksbill distribution sites, which are located 2 km from the intermittent direct contact site between La Poza and the marine coastal area. To determine the influence of contaminants from the Poza de la Muerte in Puerto López Bay, the water quality was determined and compared for six months (period July 2010-January 2011) at five strategic points in the bay of Puerto López. For this, the parameters of pH, Temperature, Conductivity, Dissolved Oxygen, (BOD5), (COD), Oils and Fats, TPH, Fecal Coliforms, Nickel, Cadmium and Lead were analyzed in 42 samples. During the 6 months, 17 trials were carried out using a tracer-float (oranges) to describe the transfer of the surface movement of marine flows from the Poza de la Muerte and maritime operation area to the bay of Puerto López. The results indicate that the Poza de la Muerte is contaminated by organic matter (BOD = 154.25 mg / L, COD = 433 mg / L), TPH (4.1 mg / L), oils and fats (39.45). mg / L) and fecal coliforms (981 NMP / 100 mL). The distribution sites of sea turtles have deficient levels of DO (4.4 mg / L) and slight levels of acidification in their waters (pH 6.5). The results of the tracer corroborate the contact of the marine flow between the Poza de la Muerte and the distribution sites of sea turtles, however, 88% of the tests carried out denote a pattern of movement towards the northeast in the bay. Concluding, that the artificial channel represents a source of contamination and that there are specific areas in the bay of Puerto López that require greater care and follow-up to preserve and conserve marine turtles.
