Although mental disorders have existed since the remotest antiquity, it was in the eighteenth century, in Europe, when the first psychiatric hospitals called "mamcomics" were built: where the objective observation of the mentally ill began, although the treatment they received was still inhuman. In the city of Quito, the psychiatric hospitals with which we currently have been built more than fifty years ago. In the beginning they were shelters for people who lived in begging and misery, that is, they were not designed as hospital units. This is one of the reasons that has made the work of psychiatric doctors difficult and has had a negative impact on the recovery of patients. With the advancement of science and research in the field of psychiatry, new concepts on mental illness and treatment of patients have been developed. recognizing above all these as human beings that require dignity. treatment and appropriate spaces for recovery Until now in our city, these considerations have not been effectively implemented in the treatment of these people. since the buildings where the mentally ill are staying are obsolete and do not provide facilities for the application of the new medical concepts One of these concepts implies the need to reinsert the mental patient into his family and society. Although it is true that a percentage of these patients may be unrecoverable, either because they have not received any treatment in time, or because of the harmful effect of the drugs that were administered until recently. Nowadays, we make the most of the sick through proper treatment and rehabilitation. they must recover their mental equilibrium and return to being self-sufficient people. Taking into account these considerations as a fundamental axis of the architectural project, this has been developed by creating special and differentiated spaces, according to the severity of the condition and the possibilities of patient recovery; that is to say, the obsolete idea of hospicio is left of side definitively as the only modality of psychiatric hospital.
